Medical Foster Home
Medical Foster Home (MFH) is a new program to Montana VA. Medical Foster Homes are state licensed adult foster homes that provide care for Veterans who are not safe living on their own or whose spouse is no longer able to manage care at home. For many Veterans who otherwise may need nursing home care, Medical Foster Home provides a wonderful alternative. Each Medical Foster Home takes care of between 1 and 3 Veterans and provides the following services:
- 3 meals/day
- Medication supervision
- Laundry services
- Help with bathing, dressing, etc.
- Transportation to medical appointments
- Around the clock supervision
Costing between $2000 - $3000/month, Medical Foster Home is more affordable than most Assisted Living Facilities. The cost depends on the amount of care a Veteran needs and is negotiated between the Veteran/family, the Medical Foster Home owner, and the VA Coordinator for Medical Foster Home.
There is help for Veterans who do not have the financial means to pay for their care in Medical Foster Home. Veterans in this program are eligible for a Veterans Aid and Assistance pension as long as he/she served in the military during a war era. For most Veterans, the Aid and Attendance pension combined with Social Security is enough to cover the cost. The Coordinator for Medical Foster Home will assist with application for Aid and Assistance, and the application is processed quickly. Generally, the Aid and Attendance pension starts about 30 days after the application is submitted.
There are currently two Medical Foster Homes in Helena, one in Great Falls, and one in Butte. In the near future there will also be a Medical Foster Home near Townsend, and a second home in Great Falls.
