The Medical Foster Home program in Montana was approved in July 2012.  The first Veteran was placed in a Medical Foster Home in September 2012.  Currently, there are three approved homes and four Veterans have been placed.  The age of the Veterans ranges from 65 to 90 years old.  The homes that are currently approved are located in Helena, but the program hopes to expand and find people willing to open their homes to Veterans in the Great Falls, Butte, Anaconda, Belgrade, and Three Forks areas.  There is a mandate that states the location of the Medical Foster Homes must be within a 100 minute drive from Fort Harrison.  The Medical Foster Home program is an alternative for a Veteran instead of a nursing home or assisted living.  The cost ranges about $1500.00 to $3000.00 per month dependent upon the degree of care the Veteran requires.

The person who runs the home (that person is called a caregiver) provides three meals per day, does laundry, supervises medication, provides supervision around the clock, and helps with personal care, such as bathing, dressing, shampooing.  The homes are intended for Veterans who need assistance and are not safe living on their own or those whose family is not able to manage their care at home any longer.

All Veterans who move into a Medical Foster Home are followed by the VA Home Based Primary Care team.  This program provides health care services to Veterans in their homes.  A VA physician supervises the health care team who provide services.  This program is for Veterans who have complex health care needs for whom routine clinic-based care is not effective.

If you know of a Veteran that this program could be beneficial or if you are interested in becoming a Medical Foster Home Care Giver, please contact:
