Ethics Consulation Service

Every VHA health care facility has an Integrated Ethics consultation service made up of staff with special knowledge and skills relating to ethics in health care.  This service responds to requests from staff, patients, and families to help them identify, understand, and resolve ethical concerns.

It is important to be able to recognize and respond to ethical concerns since they can have a significant impact on health care quality and decision making.

If you are facing uncertainty or conflict about values, you have an ethical concern.

In health care, ethical concerns often relate to:

  • Shared Decision Making With Patients
    • Ability of Patient to Make Health Care Decisions, Informed Consent Process, Surrogate Decision Making, Limits to Patient Choice, Advance Care Planning
  • End-of-Life Care
    • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Life Sustaining Treatments, Death and Post-Mortem Issues
  • Patient Privacy and Confidentiality
    • Protection of Patient Privacy and Confidentiality of Patient Information
  • Patient Care
    • Cultural/Religious Sensitivity, Conflicts of Interest, Open and Honest Communication with Patients
  • Resource Allocation
    • Fairness in Allocating Resources Across Programs, Services and Patients
  • Business and Management
